This puzzle stumped a Math PhD student. But there is a clever way to solve it!

What is the height of the red bar? This puzzle was posted on Math StackExchange by a Math PhD candidate, so I did not feel bad when I was unable to solve it! (Though I suspect some people will even find it “easy.”)
